How To Edit Right Click Menu and Main Menubar in FireFox

The more extensions and add-ons you install in FireFox the more the length is of a context menu (right click menu). It's then hard to operate when you have to perform an action which frequently require right click menu in firefox. Developers at Mozdev.org have develop a great add-on for firefox with which you can edit not only the context menu but the main menu bar (File, Edit, View etc) as well.

You can rearrange, remove menu items, and if require add back those menu items again. With firefox, all you have to do is press, CTRL+SHIFT+S on your keyboard and that brings up the Menu Editor Options dialog.

To install Menu Editor in Thunderbird, right-click the link given below, choose "Save Link As" and install the downloaded "menuedit.xpi" file using Install button in Thunderbird's Extensions window.

A Google Based User Friendly Search Engine - Search Cube

Search Engines are getting more and more advanced and user friendly. Search-Cube, is a new search engine which uses Google API as a main source for searching. It displays search results in a 3-Dimensional Cube which you can rotate through your mouse or keyboard. You can search anything just like you search in Google, and this one shows more than 10 results with a preview of a website and contents.

On one hand Search-Cube gives a user friendly interface and ease of previewing websites, on the other hand it gets little, but slower on displaying all the thumbnails of websites. You can see in below image where in I made a search for "Recession"
Some of the features I liked are:

  • You can search by rotating the cube
  • Displays images and web search results inside Cube
  • Easy to search with Search-Cube

Note: Hold Shift key and move mouse to rotate the cube or use arrow keys to rotate cube.

Google Introduced New Sitemap Generator

Submitting Sitemap is a very essential part in indexing your websites to the search engines. Lets talk about Google search engine. Google sometimes doesn't crawl through each and every page of your site, and so those pages may not be indexed in Google search engine. If you submit a sitemap of your site/blog, all of your pages are automatically crawled and indexed by search engines. But lot of people do not know how to make a sitemap of their website.

Well Google has come up to help you out with it's new tool - "Sitemap Generator". Google Sitemap Generator is a tool installed on your web server to generate the Sitemaps automatically. Unlike many other third party Sitemap generation tools, Google Sitemap Generator takes a different approach: it will monitor your web server traffic, and detect updates to your website automatically.
Google Sitemap generates sitemaps as:

  • XML Sitemaps - for Web Search
  • Mobile Sitemaps - for mobile-friendly websites
  • Code Search Sitemaps - for source code that you make available to use

Antivirus Programs Adopting New Technology

Security products like Antivirus, Internet Security Suites are all made on the base of Virus Signature Database. This database is actually a collection of mechanism and algorithms of the malicious programs. Antivirus recognizes a malicious program depending on this database and accordingly it identifies, delete and block the malicious program. Howerver, this method of detecting and removing Virus programs have become questionable.

Since everyday new virus programs are written, it is not possible to update their algorithm in the Virus Signature Database, and so most of the Antivirus cannot deal with such threats. Such threats are referred to as Zero-Day Threats. Furthermore, even Antivirus programs have themselves become so complex enough that they can be easily exploited by hackers. It becomes easy for them to make Virus then.

To overcome this situation, a New Age Antivirus is adopting a new technology called Behavioral Engines. As name explains itself, these engines detect malicious programs by their behavior. Infact these new antivirus are going to come up with both, Virus Signature Database & Behavioral Engines. This seems a perfect solution for the new series of security products.

According to Network World, “AVG has completed a deal to acquire Sana Security, which specializes in detecting malicious software based on its behavior. The behavioral technology will be integrated into AVG’s antivirus and Internet security products by the end of June, Smith said. The new feature will not be included into AVG’s free product, but the company could consider doing that in the future”

Why GMail is Different Than Other eMail Services?

Many people who use GMail find some of it's features different and unable to understand it. May be because they have old traditional eMail accessing habit. You don't find Folders (To Move an eMail from inbox to a specific folder) option, instead GMail uses Labels. GMail uses Archive to simply remove and not delete an eMail from Inbox. To make labelling automatic that sorts your incoming messages, you can use Filters in GMail. gravi_t, explains all the features in a great manner, that make Gmail different. gravi_t has written this knol here.

Labels Vs. Folders:

There are no folders in Gmail, there are labels instead. Labels are better than folders, because they save up space in your account. How? Lets say, you have one email that you want in 3 or 4 different folders. All other email services would make 3 to 4 different copies of the same email and save it in 3 to 4 different folders. But Gmail simply applies 3 to 4 Labels to the same email.

  • Each email is a piece of paper
  • Labels are post-it notes, sticky notes
  • There are default labels, like "Inbox", "Sent items", "Trash" ("Bin"), "Spam"
  • Yyou can also create labels (i.e. sticky notes)

This means that - unlike in other email services - you do not put the emails into folders. You actually attach labels to the emails.

To create labels:

  • Either open the "More options" drop-down list after you selected an email
  • Or go to Settings --> Labels, and type a name in the "Create a new label:" field.
  • You can see a list of all of your labels in the green labels box on the left.

Filters:

To make labelling automatic, you can set up filters to sort your incoming messages. Here is how to create filters:

  • Either click on the "Create filter" link at the top, to the right of the "Search the web" button
  • Or go to Settings --> Filters, and click on "Create a new filter" at the bottom

The headings on the left of your Gmail page (Inbox, Starred, Chats, Sent Mail, Drafts, All Mail, Spam and Bin) are also filters, preset by Gmail. When you click on them, Gmail gives you a filtered view of all your existing emails based on the name of the heading.

Archiving:

To "remove" an email from the Inbox:

If you want to remove a message from your inbox, DO NOT delete it! You can remove the "Inbox" label from an email - like you take a post-it note off a piece of paper. This is called archiving in Gmail. Select the email and click on "Archive". After this you can find it in All mail or under the label(s) you attached: just click on the name of the label in the green labels box on the left.

Just note that, you cannot remove the Sent mail label. This means that you cannot archive emails from Sent Mail.

Removing a Lable:

To "remove" an email from a label:

You actually remove a label from an email, and not an email from a label. Don't forget, labels are not folders. If you want to remove a label from an email, DO NOT delete the email!

  • Select the email
  • Use the "More actions" drop-down list to remove labels from emails

Deleting eMails:

ONLY emails in Trash and Spam are automatically deleted (after 30 days), all other emails will stay until you delete them (i.e. you put the Trash or Spam label on them). Note that you can also delete emails by accident with your filters, auto forwarding, POP settings or via an IMAP connection. And don't forget, you only have ONE actual copy of your email! If you delete it, it will be removed from all views (Inbox, labels, Sent Mail, All Mail).

Add Frequently Used Text Phrases into Any Application With a Single Click

The other day I and my cousin were talking about the MS-Word's Macro function that lets us use text phrases anywhere in a Word document with single shot. But it's got many limitations. You can not use that function in any other application/software than Word (Cannot apply in PDF Reader, Wordpad, Notepad etc). Also it doesn't recognize frequently used text phrases automatically. We have to manually enter the details. But today I came across with a software that not only overcomes these limitations, but provides with a bunch of other utilities.

PhraseExpress - No more typing common phrases again. It organizes frequently used text snippets. It also expands abbreviations as you type, say for example, "Sig" for a signature. It not only expands it as "Signature" but also puts in an actual signature with greetings (You have to enter signature at least in advance). The interesting thing about this software is that, it can launch programs/softwares with text shortcuts.

Like in MS-Word, PhraseExpress also Auto-Complete repetitive phrases and correct spelling mistakes, but yes, in any application. You can quickly access to the Windows Clipboard History as well. And all these great features cost you nothing. PhraseExpress is a FREEWARE.

All Features are listed below:

Text Snippets
AutoText
Auto-Complete
Spelling Correction
Clipboard Manager
Program Launcher
eMail Signatures
Macro Automation
RSI syndrome prevention

FBackup - A Complete Backup and Restore Software for Windows

FBackup is a complete backup tool for Windows Operating Systems (Windows Vista, XP, 2008/2003/2000 Server). This tool not only can backup Windows Files but also Microsoft Outlook profiles, Outlook express data, MS Sql server data, backup without zip compressions. FBackup has a simple interface and guides you through the process of defining a backup job using a friendly wizard that asks you:

  • Where do you want to store the backup (the destination).
  • What do you want to backup (the sources).
  • How do you want to run the backup (using full backup that zips the files, or mirror backup that doesn't zip them).
  • When do you want to run the backup (you can schedule it to run autmatically or run it manually).
Once a backup job is defined you can run it manually by pressing the Backup button, or if you added a scheduler it will run automatically. What makes it more powerful is that, it can easily back up sources from local drives (including USB connected drives) to destinations such as USB/Firewire connected devices or mapped network locations. It creates either standard zip files (when using the full backup type), or exact copies of the original sources without any compression.

You Can Download Your Twitter Archive

Twitter has been around on internet since long now. With a database reaching back to December 2007, one may require to download full Twitter Archive. This is now possible through TweetScan. Most people reviewed Twitter search engine TweetScan irrelevant after competitor Summize was acquired by Twitter. But today Pete Cashmore from Mashable, discovered a little-known (but long-standing) feature of the service that' incredibly useful.

You can easily download your Twitter archive at a page called TweetScan Data. The benifits, according to TweetScan are listed below:
  • Archive past exchanges
  • Publish links and quotes
  • Follow up on past projects
  • Access offline
  • View and reconnect with contacts
The only downside: like most Twitter apps, you need to enter your Twitter username and password to access the service. We consider TweetScan to be reputable, but there’s growing doubt about whether this is really the best means of Twitter authentication. Source

Popular Blogging Platform - WordPress Founder Turns 25

Founder of Wordpress, popular open-source blogging software, Matt Mullenweg turned 25 today. After quitting his job at CNET, he has devoted the majority of his time to developing a number of open source projects and is a frequent speaker at conferences. In addition to developing massively popular Blogging Software, Mullenweg was named among the 25 Most Influential People on the Web in 2008 and one of the Top 30 Under 30.

It is kind of funny to write Matt turns 25, since most founders normally turn old . Mullenweg attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where he studied jazz saxophone. Matt is also a Dvorak Keyboard user.

At his blog, Matt says: “If you had asked me 7 years ago where I would be today I couldn’t have imagined all of the amazing things that have happened, the incredible people I’ve met, and the communities that I’ve become a part of.”

Happy Birth Day Matt!!!
