A very popular social networking website, twitter.com started it's search engine, search.twitter.com. People tweets their experiences and now instead of just looking at a list of tweets, you can search tweets on any topic. It's then, when Michael Arrington said: "It's Time To Thinking of Twitter as a Search Engine". But Twitter is not just a search engine like any others, it acts as a Real Time Search Engine. People share their experiences, reviews about products, services as and when they interact with them. And others can just find them in real time by searching on Twitter.

But as wise men say: "Competition creates better products", soon after twitter launched it's real time search engine, FaceBook acquired FriendFeed, one of the largest and most-discussed social media acquisitions we’ve seen in a long time. This step was take to rival Twitter's real time search engine. A FriendFeed would not only search status updates, but photos, notes, images, videos, and links. Users are able to search in real time about what their friends update.

We all have heard the term "Tested and Proven". Looking at the success of both of these social networking sites' real time search engines, now StumbleUpon wants to be a search engine too. They announced that they will be providing new elements through their website like, better search and better social elements from next month. StumbleUpon stats it's new features include:

Mobile Numbers To Change To 11 Digit by January 2010

The Department of Telecommunications, India has proposed a transfer of numbers from 10 digit to 11 digit from January 2010.

In 2003 Indian Telecom department had planned for 10 digit mobile numbering that would last for 30 years, but given the meteoric rise in the number of mobile subscribers, the quota seems to be over within 5 years.

The growth in mobile subscribers has been nearly 100% year on year reaching 10.81 million wireless subscribers in the month of December 2008. The ten digit numbers are expected to exhaust from August 2009.

However, the fixed line phone numbers would continue to remain as is it is. While all GSM and CDMA subscribers whether old or new, would now have 11 digit numbers.

Apart from India, China and UK follow 11-digit numbers, while USA has a more integrated pattern of common numbering plan with similar numbers for mobile as well as landline numbers, much like Tata ‘Walky’ and Reliance ‘Hello’.

Even more bothersome is that, IE (Internet Explorer) often takes a page out of the Temporary Internet Files, instead of getting new pages each time. This can be good if you are on a slow connection such as a 56K or lower. But if you are on a fast broadband connection, then you can easily reduce the size of your Temporary Internet Files to just 1MB without affecting overall performance.

Launch Internet Explorer
Select the Tools from the menu bar
Then select Internet Options (from the drop down menu)
Once the internet options has loaded click on the general tab

Google Starts Offline GMail - Access GMail Even Without Internet Connection

Today GMail is starting to roll out an experimental feature in Gmail Labs: Offline Gmail. Now even if you're offline, you can open your web browser, go to gmail.com, and get to your mail just like you're used to.

Web-based email is great because you can check it from any computer, but there's one little catch: it's inherently limited by your internet connection. From public WiFi to smartphones equipped with 3G, from mobile broadband cards to fledgling in-flight wireless on airplanes, Internet access is becoming more and more ubiquitous -- but there are still times when you can't access your webmail because of an unreliable or unavailable connection.

Now GMail has overcome these gaps. Once you turn on this feature, Gmail uses Gears to download a local cache of your mail. As long as you're connected to the network, that cache is synchronized with Gmail's servers. When you lose your connection, Gmail automatically switches to offline mode, and uses the data stored on your computer's hard drive instead of the information sent across the network. You can read messages, star and label them, and do all of the things you're used to doing while reading your webmail online. Any messages you send while offline will be placed in your outbox and automatically sent the next time Gmail detects a connection.

Offline Gmail available to everyone who uses Gmail in US or UK English over the next couple of days, so if you don't see it under the Labs tab yet, it should be there soon. Once you see it, just follow these steps to get started:

Click Settings and click the Labs tab.
Select Enable next to Offline Gmail.
Click Save Changes.
After your browser reloads, you'll see a new "Offline^0.1" link in the upper righthand corner of your account, next to your username. Click this link to start the offline set up process and download Gears if you don't already have it.

Just a couple of hours back I noticed that Google Adsense has started showing up Public Service Ads. As I surfed further, I noticed this change in many websites which I regularly visit. I then visited my own blog and I too had the same problem.

But Google did not carry out the project since experiment stated that people used the Ad Service less. Now again in 2009, Google has started Text Ads in it's image search service. It's not yet clear how useful it would be for people and Google but it's clear that Google has now a new source to generate more revenues.

Antivirus Programs Adopting New Technology

Security products like Antivirus, Internet Security Suites are all made on the base of Virus Signature Database. This database is actually a collection of mechanism and algorithms of the malicious programs. Antivirus recognizes a malicious program depending on this database and accordingly it identifies, delete and block the malicious program. Howerver, this method of detecting and removing Virus programs have become questionable.

Since everyday new virus programs are written, it is not possible to update their algorithm in the Virus Signature Database, and so most of the Antivirus cannot deal with such threats. Such threats are referred to as Zero-Day Threats. Furthermore, even Antivirus programs have themselves become so complex enough that they can be easily exploited by hackers. It becomes easy for them to make Virus then.

Why GMail is Different Than Other eMail Services?

Many people who use GMail find some of it's features different and unable to understand it. May be because they have old traditional eMail accessing habit. You don't find Folders (To Move an eMail from inbox to a specific folder) option, instead GMail uses Labels. GMail uses Archive to simply remove and not delete an eMail from Inbox. To make labelling automatic that sorts your incoming messages, you can use Filters in GMail. gravi_t, explains all the features in a great manner, that make Gmail different. gravi_t has written this knol here.

Labels Vs. Folders:

There are no folders in Gmail, there are labels instead. Labels are better than folders, because they save up space in your account. How? Lets say, you have one email that you want in 3 or 4 different folders. All other email services would make 3 to 4 different copies of the same email and save it in 3 to 4 different folders. But Gmail simply applies 3 to 4 Labels to the same email.

Each email is a piece of paper
Labels are post-it notes, sticky notes
There are default labels, like "Inbox", "Sent items", "Trash" ("Bin"), "Spam"
Yyou can also create labels (i.e. sticky notes)

This means that - unlike in other email services - you do not put the emails into folders. You actually attach labels to the emails.

To create labels:

Either open the "More options" drop-down list after you selected an email
Or go to Settings --> Labels, and type a name in the "Create a new label:" field.
You can see a list of all of your labels in the green labels box on the left.

Filters:

To make labelling automatic, you can set up filters to sort your incoming messages. Here is how to create filters:

Either click on the "Create filter" link at the top, to the right of the "Search the web" button
Or go to Settings --> Filters, and click on "Create a new filter" at the bottom

The headings on the left of your Gmail page (Inbox, Starred, Chats, Sent Mail, Drafts, All Mail, Spam and Bin) are also filters, preset by Gmail. When you click on them, Gmail gives you a filtered view of all your existing emails based on the name of the heading.

Archiving:

To "remove" an email from the Inbox:

If you want to remove a message from your inbox, DO NOT delete it! You can remove the "Inbox" label from an email - like you take a post-it note off a piece of paper. This is called archiving in Gmail. Select the email and click on "Archive". After this you can find it in All mail or under the label(s) you attached: just click on the name of the label in the green labels box on the left.

Just note that, you cannot remove the Sent mail label. This means that you cannot archive emails from Sent Mail.

Removing a Lable:

To "remove" an email from a label:

You actually remove a label from an email, and not an email from a label. Don't forget, labels are not folders. If you want to remove a label from an email, DO NOT delete the email!

Deleting eMails:

ONLY emails in Trash and Spam are automatically deleted (after 30 days), all other emails will stay until you delete them (i.e. you put the Trash or Spam label on them). Note that you can also delete emails by accident with your filters, auto forwarding, POP settings or via an IMAP connection. And don't forget, you only have ONE actual copy of your email! If you delete it, it will be removed from all views (Inbox, labels, Sent Mail, All Mail).

The other day I and my cousin were talking about the MS-Word's Macro function that lets us use text phrases anywhere in a Word document with single shot. But it's got many limitations. You can not use that function in any other application/software than Word (Cannot apply in PDF Reader, Wordpad, Notepad etc). Also it doesn't recognize frequently used text phrases automatically. Google Puts a New Favicon Again

A Favicon is a small icon that shows up on your URL bar or your bookmarks list when you access a website. Google had changed it's Favicon last time in June 2008, and now in this year Google has again come up with a new Favicon. Google annoced it's users to submit their designs on favicon in June 2008. Regardless to say, plenty of favicons submitted since then and today Google introduced a new Favicon submitted by one of their users. The Favicon is selected on the basis of design elements and few other factors.

Phishing eMail Leads to a Fake CNN Site That Installs Trojan

Another phishing email is circulating these days which appears as if it came from CNN, but it takes you to the Fake CNN Website that shows up a Video related to current Israel-Hamas conflict. When you click on it to play the video it promts you to download the lates version of Adobe Flash Player, which actually is a Trojan. Trojan is used to steal fifancial or other sensitive information.

Sam Curry, vice president of product management and strategy at RSA says, "The Trojan looks for encrypted communications between the computer and known financial institutions and when it sees data being sent it diverts it to a malicious third-party." Source

Different types of Trojans can be programmed for specific tasks. This Trojan is "SSL Stealer". This Trojan is not new one or a newly advanced piece of program. But What is new is the socially engineered application of this Trojan that exploits users concerned about the recent events in Gaza, says RSA Research Lab.

RSA discovered the attack early on Wednesday and has worked with others to get the fake site shut down. At a peak on Thursday as many as 80,000 of the phishing e-mails were being sent out, according to Curry.

Downloading Songs On To iPhone Over EDGE is Possible

Many a times it happens at the press release, product launch or at some expo that the company or product representative forgets/neglects to announce it's key feature. Same happened with Phil Schiller, at his Tuesday morning Macworld Expo Keynote Address. He said, "Apple had added support for purchasing and downloading music and podcasts on the iPhone using a 3G data connection. But Schiller didn't mention that you can download the same using pretty slower EDGE data connection as well.

John Gruber who is running Daring Fireball pointed it out just after the keynote. He also has mentioned in his site, "As of two minutes ago, it appears you can now buy music from iTunes from your iPhone over EDGE and 3G, not just Wi-Fi." He further states that he was expecting Schiller to announce it later on in the keynote, but Schiller specifically said, music was now downloadable over "3G Networks". But well, John Gruber is right - It works over EDGE too.

Jonathan Seff from Macworld reports that, he turned off Wi-Fi and 3G on his iPhone, then proceeded to search for and download a free iTunes track using his EDGE connection, and it worked. But he also reports that, there are two downsides to downloading over EDGE.

It takes around 15 minutes and 12 seconds to download a 9.3MB track, which is a lot longer than it would have taken over 3G or Wi-Fi.
The iPhone has same size restriction for iTunes downloads that it has for App Store downloads. i.e. You can't download anything larger than 10MB over 3G or EDGE.

Also, regarding Boingo: That company announced a new Apple product: A connector app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. For $7.95 a month, users of those devices can access the entire Boingo Wi-Fi network. For U.S.-based iPhone users on the AT&T network, this is not such a great product since AT&T-provided Wi-Fi is now free for them, but international users and travelers, and iPod Touch users (perhaps those who use TruPhone for VOIP calls) may find it a good deal."

Twitter Phishing Trail Follows To DigitalGangester

There have been as many as 33 celebrity Twitter accounts hacked this morning. Each accounts had posted different messages with different intentions. Lately, it turned out to be posted by different people with different goals. The intention behind posting messages on Fox News & Rick Sanchez from CNN were to simply destroy their reputation. While on many other profiles, messages led to some or the other affiliate links, with the intention to make some money.

Michael Arrington from TechCrunch writes on the Twitter hack trail to DigitalGangster. He writes, "It all seems to point back to one person that goes by “Gmz” on a hacker site called Digital Gangster (this site was also where Miley Cyrus photos were posted after they were taken from her hacked Gmail account). Gmz, says a source, obtained the account credentials for the Twitter accounts and then posted them on DigitalGanster. It was removed shortly afterward, but not before others grabbed the information and started to post on the various sites."

He also emailed Gmz from his new Digital Gangster account to confirm that he originally posted the credentials. Twitter, of course, could follow up with Digital Gangster via their attorneys or the police and get access to that information. And it should be very easy to track the people who posted affiliate links on hacked Twitter accounts - just contact the affiliate companies and follow the money.

India Opens Call Center to Help Control Population Growth

The phone rang at a call center in New Delhi one recent afternoon. When an agent picked up the receiver, a young woman whispered hesitantly. She said that she lived with her large extended family in a remote rural settlement and that nobody knew she was calling.

"I told her to be open and have no fear. She paused after every word," recalled Payalkumari, 27, the call center agent, who uses only her first name. "Then she slowly opened up. She was newly married. She said her mother-in-law wanted her to have a child right away, but she was not ready to. She asked, 'Is there some contraception that I can use secretly and nobody else will get to know in the family?'

"Payalkumari has taken hundreds of such calls since June, when India's government-sponsored National Population Stabilization Fund opened a call center to provide reliable information about such socially taboo subjects as family planning, contraception and reproductive health -- the first service of its kind in the country.

"In our culture, we cannot have open conversations about sensitive subjects like sex, contraception, abortion and pregnancy. People want answers, but who do they ask? Not parents, not teachers, not elders. They hesitate to go to the doctor. People are shy to even utter the word 'condom' at a pharmacy," said the science graduate, who acknowledged that her family is like that as well. "But they can call here anonymously and ask any question. I give them all the information that they need. These are the people I need to convince for controlling India's population growth."

It is been reported that the Jerusalem-based Debkafile was temporarily put out of action Saturday evening by a cyber attack.

Debka, a news site, specializes in military and political analysis. It's still not clear whether this was a denial of service (DoS) attack. At about 19:00 local time the site went down. Immediately authority sent out a note to subscribers that both its English and Hebrew sites had been under attack. The site's publishers were not available to make any comments.

It's clearly assumed by everyone that it's the result of week-long conflict between Israel and Hamas. Just to note that the Israel Defense Force sent its troops into Gaza in a move to smother missile fire.

India's Reliance Communication Launches GSM Services Nationwide

Reliance Communications, part of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group, on Tuesday announced the launch of GSM-based cellular services in 14 circles. The company has completed the GSM network roll out six months ahead of schedule by investing Rs.10,000 crores so far. This nationwide GSM rollout will include over 11,000 towns. "We will be doubling our GSM coverage from 11,000 towns and 3 lakh villages to 24,000 towns and six lakh villages over the next few months.", Mr. Anil Ambani Said.

RCom's (Reliance Communication) GSM Network is the first nationwide ‘enhanced’ EDGE network, a technology that would offer the fastest Internet access speeds available to Indians. Additionally, through their global partnership on both GSM and CDMA, their customers will be able to roam internationally to more than 200 countries on more networks at attractive rates.

RCom's nationwide GSM rollout has been a very large project, wherein Reliance has once again proven its execution skills. They received the GSM spectrum only in January this year, which is less than 11 months ago. Since then their network rollout has been completed and more than 11,000 towns and 340,000 villages will be part of their GSM offerings to begin with.

It will help the challaning officer to know about the previous offences committed by the driver or pending challans on the vehicles. Moreover, the device will also enable the policemen to know whether the vehicle involved in a traffic rule violation is stolen, the previous history of vehicle or driver in accidents or whether any notice from traffic police is pending against the vehicle.

You can check your hearing capability for all frequencies of the audible spectrum, separately for each ear. The software is designed to give a quick Ear Test. You can calculate up to which frequency you are able to hear a sound and compare it with your friends and family. Actually the upper frequency limit of the human ear is entirely dependent on a person's age. A child can hear frequencies of up to 20,000 Hz (Oscillations per second). For an old person, it can be as low as 5,000 Hz or even lower, while for a middle aged person (Around 40 Years) a frequency of 14,000 Hz is an average value. Some people can have gaps in their hearing spectrum, due to inner ear injuries - this can also be checked.

Due to security reasons lot of companies sent out PDF forms. You're required to take a printout of it, fill it up, again scan it and send them back through email. You have to go through the whole troublesome process simply because you cannot write into a PDF file. There also can be a situation where you have a document scanned and you've to email it, but you can't fill out the blanks.

FillOutAForm enables you to fill out either a scanned form or a PDF form on your computer and print it (or print the original form with your entries superimposed). New York Times Website Blocked By China

It is not a new thing for China being criticized for isolating herself from the media. It's been reported lately, that the access to The New York Times has been blocked in China. People living in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou tried to access The New York Times and they received a message stating, "The Site is Not Available". However it's been noted that the site was accessible through Virtual Private Network (VPN).

The officials were rejecting to state anything and said they had no information on the case. Though the Foreign Ministry made a point and reminded that the China which gave a free rein to Internet before and during the Beijing Olympics in August, was within its rights to block websites with content illegal under Chinese law.

It is said that China regularly blocks sites it finds inappropriate. Especially those related to Tibet. AsiaWeek said, "Access to the Chinese-language versions of the BBC, Voice of America and Hong Kong media Ming Pao News and AsiaWeek were blocked early this month".
